I have not read much on Hyderabad, but there have been gleanings of Karachi on this site over the years. To create a cityout of a dusty desert fishing village, the Empire imported a English speaking civil service from Bombay : Eurasians andScots, Parsis, Mangalorians and Goans. The railroad to newly 'liberated' Pashtun 'bad lands' soon followed. It ran throughHyderabad which Napier had gathered after heavy battling. Free lancers soon flooded into the town and they created a modern city that heralded next century. Pakistan must be grateful to them. Goa has supplied the city with all it's bishops since the Diocese was created.Charles Napier's personal war took him there from his post of CinC of the Bombay Presidency in 1942. To confirm the conquest, he wired the words 'peccatta' to his governor back home : "I have sinned" in Latin, he shamelessly boasted of the acquisition of "Sind" Parliament was in an uproar and the governor was fired, but Napier kept his job and the riches that followed, much likethe pirates of NEFA in 1837, the Naga Hills in 1866 and the Andamans in 1878. His descendants continue to live in theestate he created and named Sind House, in Surrey.
