With the new Corporators of the Corporation of City of Panaji (CCP) elected, now the eyes shift on who becomes the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.
With the ruling party loaded with 25 Corporators it should be no ordeal whatsoever. We have seen over the last over a decade that the Mayor and Deputy Mayor are not elected by the Corporators but selected by their kingpin Babush Monserrate. This is a very undemocratic procedure as the inherent right to select and elect the Mayor and the Deputy should actually vest solely with the Corporators. Infact it would be prudent for Babush Monserrate not to interfere and manipulate the functioning of the CCP. Let us hope the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be humble persons of integrity and having no criminal cases pending against them while also not being even remotely linked to any of the past CCP scams. >From a glance at the list of the Corporators elected Vithal Chopdekar or Shubham Chodankar who already have the experience of being the Mayor earlier with no controversies to their credit, may be in the reckoning while the age factor of being 67 may go against Carolina Po, as the CCP now desperately requires someone young and energetic besides experience to clear the current awful mess. The fourth time Corporator and the very down to earth suave Diksha Mainkar could be considered for the Deputy Mayor’s saddle. If uncontroversial candidates are considered for these posts, all the Corporators including the 5 in the Opposition may be able to reach to an unanimous decision on who should be be the next Mayor and Deputy of Goa’s capital city during the 60th year of Goa’s Liberation.
