When I first landed in Bahrain still wet behind the ears, just a few years out
of college and socialist India, I was awed by the huge high-end Jashanmal
Department Store in Manama. Later on I would come to know they were Indian
business pioneers who had established themselves in the Persian Gulf wielding
enormous mercantile power that arose not only from their business acumen, but
also from their early connection with local tribal chiefs who were later to
become those countries’ rulers.

Probably Sindhis from Pakistan (then undivided India) here is Mohan Jashanmal a
scion of that family telling his story. It makes for interesting viewing giving
a glimpse of early Persian Gulf history.
