Emmeline da Cunha, a pioneering Goan doctor in the middle of the Bombay plague

The completion of her degree in Bombay coincided with the beginning of the bubonic plague, in 1896, and it was in the port of the city that she started to work as medical inspector. A few years later she departed for Florence, Italy, where she specialized in Bacteriology (1899). Newcastle Medical School was the next stop in 1901 and she finished her, intense but brief, research career at the London School of Tropical Medicine, in, 1902, where she signed an article at the British Medical Journal, on the “Sleeping Disease”. Marriage meant the end of her journeys in science. Her cosmopolitan, while also contradictory life and identity enable us to reflect on the crossings between gender, colonialism and science c. 1900.
