The skewed move to appoint Sunil Arora as the Governor of Goa just days after his retirement as India’s Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) is in utter bad taste and absolutely inappropriate. Yet another very bad precedent indeed.
Is this the BJP’s way of rewarding the former CEC for the favours done in compromising the much needed Independence and Autonomy of the Election Commission of India? The manner in which the Government kept Goa without a full time Governor for eight long months’ only indicates that the Goa Raj Bhavan slot was kept well planned for Sunil Arora to take over on his retirement as CEC. The very fact that a Governor was not appointed for so long had correctly raised doubts that the government had already promised the post to its chosen one. Another black day was in 2014 when the BJP appointed P. Sathasivam as Governor of Kerala within just four months of his retirement as the Chief Justice of India which also sent out a very wrong message. More recently Ranjan Gogoi after his retirement also as the Chief Justice of India in November 2019 was also within four months nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha and had claimed that he would be the voice of the Judiciary in the Upper House of Parliament. Could Mr. Ranjan Gogoi kindly enlighten us as to what over the last more than one year has been his contribution in the Rajya Sabha towards raising issues pertaining to the Judiciary? The BJP while in the Opposition had demanded that former judges must not be given post-retirement appointments at least for two years but once in Power has miserably failed to walk its own loud talk.
