As many as 26 Covid-19 patients lost their lives while receiving treatment at
the Goa government-run Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) between 2 am and
6 am, health minister Vishwajit Rane said on Tuesday.
Chief minister Pramod Sawant, who visited GMCH, said the gap between the
"availability of medical oxygen and its supply to Covid-19 wards might have
caused some issues for the patients".
Rane said the medical oxygen requirement of the facility as of Monday was 1,200
jumbo cylinders of which only 400 were supplied.
"The high court should investigate the reasons behind the deaths," the health
minister said.
At least 11 Covid-19 patients in the ICU of the Andhra Pradesh government-run
Ruia Hospital in Tirupati died on Monday eveningdue to lack of oxygen after a
tanker with the gas got late by minutes.
Death of eight patients at Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences (TIMS),
Gachibowli, on Sunday was also reportedly attributed to oxygen shortage.
The Allahabad High Court had last week observed that "death of Covid patients
just for non-supplying of oxygen to the hospitals is a criminal act and not
less than a genocide" by those responsible for ensuring the continuous
procurement and supply of medical oxygen.
