<just have a walk to Mr. Parrikar's constituency and see. You'll see more
Goans in his constituency then other Urban cities in Goa..example. Vasco,
Margao, Ponda which are highly populated with Non-Goans.>[Kamalaksh Chari]

Here are a few numbers about Manohar Parrikar's constituency, Panjim, from
the recent elections for what its worth. General Electors (total) 14352.
This is the smallest among all Goa constituencies. It is smaller than
Dhargalim's 16377 and Poinguinim's 15417. The biggest are Ponda (36578),
Cortalim (34567) and Navelim ((34117). The total for the state is 995369.
Hence Panjim's is about 1.5% (only).

In the election, Panjim had a voter turnout of almost 70%. The total votes
polled have been given as 10,564. Parrikar polled 6004 votes beating his
nearest rival by 1444 votes. Extrapolation of merit in governance from this
razor thin margin of victory in a minuscule constituency does seem rather
far-fetched.

It is quite possible that folks here have been carried away by the civic
improvements attempted by Parrikar on a crash basis in 2004. It should be
mentioned that land values in Panjim have reportedly zoomed by 100% in the
last one year. Presently Panjim is believed to be the most expensive place
in Goa to buy land. The wealth effect ascribed superficially and myopically
by "Goans" to Parrikar may have been a contributory factor in his narrow
victory.
