BARBORA'S FIRSTTANGO IN PARIS
Elvidio Miranda
The court craft of Barbora Krejcikova of the Czech Republic prevailed over the
persistence of the Russian star Anastasia Pavlyuchenkoova, who was trying to
win the French Open in her 52nd attempt, in an absorbing final at the Roland
Garros 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. Neither disappointed the adoring crowd with an amazing
display of high-quality tennis. Barbora dedicated her win to her mentor, the
late Jana Novotna who had been inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame,  and who
died of cancer. Barbora emulated Hana Mndlikova who won the Frech Open 40 years
back as the only other Czech to have won in Paris. So Barbora becomes the
latest darling pretty of the Frech capital having clinched her maiden Grand
Slam, having emerged victorious much against the odds.
