Remembered the late Alfred Tavares (b. 21 June 1944), who was quite a prankster when he was a journalist in Goa in the 1960s and maybe early 1970s too. He shifted to Sweden, and, maybe because of our shared profession then (and the social media interest, via Goanet) were good friends. He was a great storyteller, doer and, I always believed, had a naughty boy hiding in him till his last! I remember the time the Lott'likar dressed up as an Arab (it was Carnival in Goa) and walked into the Herald office, shocking everyone. Or when he took a pass to the old Goa Assembly (courtesy his cousin, the late Dr Wilfred de Souza, I guess) and shouted loudly in the House: "Speaker sir, you're a bl*dy fl and so is every one of these 39 other legislators." (Sentenced for detention till the rising of the House, a penalty he gladly underwent!) Or the time when we were covering the rape case of a Swedish tourist, one of the accused hit his camera which I was holding (fortunately strapped carefully around to my wrist as taught in the first lesson of photography class), trying to send it crashing down one floor; and Alfred screamed as if the roof had fallen on our heads! Once, Alfred had been actively writing in the local press (he hardly got paid for it, writing rates being what they were/are in Goa.) At that time, our photographer-colleague Alfred Vaz just passed away (very young, following a very unfortunate road accident). By some mistake, the priest at the funeral kept paying tribute to Alfred *Tavares instead of Alfred Vaz! At one point, Alfred wrote a lot for Indian publications like The Week and the India Abroad News Service, and would very generously send costly fax'ed copied to papers like the Herald in Goa, knowing only too well that they otherwise couldn't pay for receiving direct news from there. He was a prominent Indian correspondent in that part of the world when the Bofors scam was breaking, in the mid to late 1980s. In Goa, he worked for the Mario Cabral e Sa-edited Goa Monitor, which was short-lived though. There are many stories. Other things apart, Tavares also found one of the bullets that killed the path-breaking Swedish politician Olof Palme, no urban legend this. The proof is here. See: https://tinyurl.com/yzadw946 The title says: "The Palme murder: Indian journalist found one of the bullets". I thought of him almost exactly two days back, without even realizing it was his birthday!
