In the summit clash of the Wimbledon women's singles, Australia's Asheigh Barty
beat 13th seed Czech Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 6-7 (4-7}, 6-3 in just under two
hours in an enthralling match replete with sensational court craft and
thrilling rallies, to defend her top seeding and also as the world's No. 1
women's player. In the process, Barty, became the first Australian women's
tennis winner of Wimbledon since 1980 when her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley won
it. Barty thus added another Grand Slam to her collection, after her win at the
2019 French Open, which was her first Grand Slam title. Karolina Pliskova, who
is the former world No. 1 exhibited her solid fighting spirit as she went on to
clinch the second set in the tie-breaker, and became the worthy runner-up
displaying fighting qualities though she denied herself her first Grand Slam
title which has eluded her. She thus still becomes a former world women's No. 1
who has failed to win a Grand Slam like the consistent Dinara Safina of Russia.
Barty, by winning the Wimbledon has thus demonstrated that she can be the best
in the slow clay courts of Roland Garros as well the relatively fast grass
surface of Wimbledon.
