Gilbert is a now a self-anointed martyr for the cause. It is illuminating that he uses the phrase "defend the Catholic Church" a la the Crusaders, Inquisitors. Being stuck in catechism class of the 1950's he does not realize that there are millions of progressive Catholics around the world who have progressed beyond sweeping Catholic transgressions under the carpet. Just today Los Angeles Cardinal Mahoney publicly apologized for the sex abuse scandal. The late Pope John Paul II and the current Pope Benedict XVI have publicly acknowledged Catholic past wrongdoings. So who is Gilbert afraid of? Which narrow section of the Catholic Church is he defending? The one which buries its head in the sand? The right-wing fundamentalists which act like the Taliban and RSS? Regards, George
