an unlikely roadblock — a citizen journalist. In an unlikely David and Goliath encounter, the secretary of Vasco Civic and Consumer Forum exposed the illegal sand excavation operations by the army jawans at Utorda beach on Saturday morning. Speaking to reporters, the Forum Secretary Savio Pereira Andrade and member P C Prasad said they were at Utorda beach on Saturday morning, when they were startled to find army jawans and a military pickup involved in illegally extracting sand from Utorda beach. "They were extracting sand in the presence of private security guards of a nearby starred hotel," Pereira said. Andrade began capturing the incident on his mobile phone and later alerted the hotel management and local taxi operators. "The taxi operators informed me that the military has been involved in illegal sand excavation since Friday," Pereira said. Pereira confronted the jawans and reminded them that sand excavation on the beach was a crime; they casually replied that they were not aware about the law. "They (jawans) then began to negotiate and agreed to offload the sand, if I deleted the snaps on my mobile phone," Pereira said and later reported the matter to Verna police. When contacted, Verna Police PI Raposo informed that police intercepted the jawans and the Military pickup was taken to the police station. The jawans were then directed to offload the sand at the beach. To a query on the purpose behind the excavation of sand, PI Raposo said the jawans wanted to beautify the area at 2ST military area in Ponda. "The incident has been reported to the army officials of the particular unit," PI Raposo said. ---------------------------- HERALD 15/07/07 page 2 ---------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------- GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ---------------------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa --------------------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ---------------------------------------------- __._,_.___ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
