Message: 3 Date: Mon, 13 Sep 2021 11:14:31 +0530 V M <[email protected]> writing (Times of India, 19/9/2021) Wrote on the Subject: [Goanet] Rethinking Panjim's Cultural Capital In his usual style VM made several very pertinent observations. First: Mr. Sudhir Jakhere, the senior superintendent of post offices (SSPO), announced well-conceived plans to convert the upper floor of the postal service’s colonial-era headquarters into the first philately museum in this part of the country An excellent decision from an unexpected source has cast another highlight on Panjim?s superb heritage infrastructure, where the success of both private and non-state actors serves to underline the Goa administration’ own entrenched failures over many years and across every political alignment. More than that SSPO Jakhere has formulated these plans in consultation with the philatelic community in India?s smallest state, which is already very excited about exhibitions to showcase Goa?s remarkable trans cultural legacy in stamps. Secondly there are other Departments that could emulate the Post Office. He gives the example from the waterfront; the Indian Customs and Excise Department has its own centuries-old state headquarters, maintains its only museum anywhere, which depicts the never-ending battle between smugglers and the officers tasked with thwarting them. Thirdly, >>>>Where can we experience and understand the peerless legacy of Goa?s artistic heritage from Mesolithic-era petro glyphs first carved thousands of years ago right to the foundational figures of Indian modernism: Vasudeo Gaitonde and Francis Newton Souza>>> I think that 99.9% of Goans from mainland Tanzania would not know about Gaitonde or Francis>>>> Fourthly, VM draws attention to Indo-Portuguese furniture, which is elsewhere the centrepiece of grand collections like the V&A Or, the amazing history of photography in Goa, and by Goan photographers? Shouldn?t we have a diaspora museum, tracking our story around the world Similarly, Prasad Lolayekar, who headed the Department of Art and Culture for a stellar decade until 2017, the state made many wise investments in improving and upgrading heritage infrastructure Finally, What about Goa?s peerless musical legacy, in both Hindustani and Western classical music, with a highlight reel stretching from Bollywood to Jazz to Trance? VM has many more points I will conclude in his own words (Italics)>>>>*For all this ? and very much more ? there is next to nothing. It is an unconscionable situation, perpetrated over decades of neglect, with generations of Goans compelled to grow up largely ignorant about their own historical, cultural, social, artistic and architectural heritage……The opportunities are real so are the threats eg the Adil Shahs Palace ….>>>>>* Why am I excited .....I happen to be a PHILATELIST. Started at the age 7 because of a certain JP Luis who was the next door neighbor, a stamp collector ....soon I was armed with a magnifying glass. knew about perforations etc etc ....In secondary school had friends all over the world from Brazil to Mauritius Have Artist friends from all over Africa..... While in Harare ....Zimbabwe began to appreciate what a well organized Stamp Bureau could do....... So basically Diaspora Goans from Africa can help me. Ten days ago I approached the Director General of the Post Office and the Director General of The Tanzania Library Services .... I found Tanzania issuing Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck stamps paying thousand of dollars in Royalties it was money down the drain a loss for the Post Office....In my second attempt I will have a few Goans who joined forces for the Liberation of Africa from Zanzibar to Angola and Mozambique on Tanzanian stamps .
