During the campaign which will continue till 31st July GOACAN will conduct a joint drive alongwith the officials of the Traffic Police, Directorate of Transport, Consumer Forum volunteers and Consumer Welfare Cells members to create awareness, record complaints and book violations.
While the statistics of injuries & deaths on the roads of Goa are shocking, a lot needs to be done in the area of Road Safety and Traffic Management with the direct involvement of the Goan consumer to Organise and not just Agonise over the matter. Lack of knowledge of the rules of the road, unsafe driving practices, sale of fake helmets & seat belts, lack of maintainence of speed breakers & rumbler strips, the need for Comfortable, Affordable and Safe travel by public transport are some of the issues that will be highlighted by GOACAN during this fortnight. GOACAN through the village based Consumer Forums has been consistently advocating for the preparation of localized Traffic Management Plans at the Panchayat & Municipal level and at the educational institutions through the recently launched Consumer Welfare Cells. Such decentralised planning will result in effective identification and provision of parking areas, bus bays, notified bus stops, and zebra crossings besides proper sign boards on all village roads intersecting the State and National Highways in Goa. The fortnight will highlight the need for the PWD to set up a Road Engineering Cell to deal with the accident prone spots on all the State and National Highways, the immediate appointment of a PWD Asst. Engineer to monitor and report to the District Magistrates the installation and maintenance of all Speed Breakers / rumbler strips and signage's on the roads of Goa.
