On that fateful day I was crossing Lake Victoria on my way home in Dar es Salaam. We heard the news over BBC ..I was saddened about Goa. The impact of tiny Portugal from Brazil, to Africa, India Goa was immense. It was also Uhuru for us in Tanganyika..from the British Mandateship granted by the League of Nations. I had no qualms about what freedom would mean. I am this reaction for three main reasons: 1) My ancestral home is Quepem not far from the main hub of Southern Goa. I have relatives in Margao and apart from that do not know what I would do without the Great Bookshop 1556 2) The Bridge in Quepem which the Portuguese built was fortunately not blown or destroyed but an artillery shell was fired about 400 metres which destroyed part of the roof and the Chandeliers . The house was an old Hindu structure which housed the Portuguese Judge who had lef some years before. My parents decided to invest in that house which was next door to our grandfathers house. At the time of the invasion, my Dad's cousin Domingo was the sole caretaker. The Sikh soldiers who entered the house , took all the guns in the house...my father hunted in Tanganyika for sport and left ...I suppose went to Margao 3) The Germans who ruled Germany East Africa (Tanganyika, Rwanda and Burundi) treated the Goans as Portuguese. This meant that they were treated in the European Hospital, were allowed to build Houses and own property ....which British Indians were prohibited. VERY VERY LITTLE IS KNOWN ABOUT THE GOANS IN GERMAN EAST AFRICA....Your group in Germany could help. Several Thesis could be written Thank you ....Happy Christmas to you and all the family and friends.
