It’s a common ploy with politicians:
When your economy is tanking, when the big flaws in your governance are 
showing, when the promises you once made are proved to be empty, find a 
whipping boy. In India where society is so slavishly wrapped around meaningless 
tradition and rites, what better diversion than religion to get your population 
to overlook your failures. 

South Asia follows a pattern: whether it is Buddhist Sri Lanka or Muslim 
Pakistan or the elephant in this post, minorities are expendable. The sooner 
you drive them out, the sooner you can turn on your own.
