Feb 10 And maybe this column isn't really about mathematics - except that I was just so captivated by the story of a oil tycoon called James Vaughn. He seems to have funded research into Fermat's Last Theorem over many decades, until Andrew Wiles proved it in the mid-1990s. (And then Vaughn's funding foundation was investigated by the IRS and charged with various misdeeds.)
Why would a man like Vaughn fund research like this? I don't know for sure. Put it down to what mathematics inspires.
