Dear Adolfo, There are certainly not 1 million Goans in Canada. There is no accurate count of Goans anywhere in the Diaspora since no concerted effort has been made by any Goan organization to count them. Wonder if Portugal is an exception.
All figures of Goans in any place outside Goa are really wild stabs at very rough estimates. Canada might be one of the best of those wild stabs since we have John Nazareth, an eminent statistician (though not in population demographics) who has probably mathematically worked his way through to a figure of 40,000 but there is no review of it from any other source that is expressly able to separate Goans from the rest of the population. Even the Canadian Census will go only so far as to allow Goans to fit themselves into one big ethnicity, that of South Asian. This doesn’t help much. There would be a huge advantage to the G.O.A Toronto creating a census of Goans in Canada. This would be a Herculean Labour but if you cannot do it in Canada, you have little success of doing it anywhere else. The advantage of such a census would be of enormous advantage to the Goan community both with Government bodies and with the private sector and NGOs. Roland.
