When Soviet Union was dismantled Ukraine had 3000 nukes .when Warsa pact was edged out NATO gave sovereign assurance to Ukraine along with Russia USA and UK for disabling the nukes.and to protect borders, independence or to spread NATO in this region. NUKES would have made invasion difficult..These assurances were observed in breach. UKRAINE intented to join NATO, but as of the day embraced EU..Russia under Putin desired to revive the old Soviet Union with its pride of culture.First he annexed Crimea, Chechnya and now fermenting internal resistance with ethnic Russians and has recognised too providing arms to rebells.The western model of Democracy is different from Russian model and hence labeled as autocratic regime Putin has declared himself as life President till 2036 if he survives It his fear and speculation that Russia will be encircled by NATO posing direct threat with NATO presence in his backyard May be he plans to divide Ukraine like Yugoslavia, give indepence to rebel regions replace a pupet regime in Ukraine The world is only debating, condemning offering humanitarian, military and financial aid while lauding the spirit of self defense without active bots on the ground It is a new dangerous precedent in continuation with wars in Irak Syria, North Korea Turkey.
