*HUMANITY AND DRACONIAN LAWS* We are a democracy with a Constitution which our elected members take an oath to uphold! The Supreme Court has rightly brought to the notice of the government that it must balance security with civil liberties! The British used the 1870 Sedition law for its chilling effect on free speech, using it to jail Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru, Sardar Patel,Tilak and many of our freedom fighters. Our governments since 1947 have not only held on to this law upto today but kept misusing it to stifle dissent and free speech. Under great pressure the government has said it needs time to review this Act and the court has put a stay on its use and issued directions that all booked under this law be considered for bail until the government decides whether the law be amended or scrapped. There are many other draconian laws that have no place in this day and age like the UAPA made for terrorists but being used on anyone the government thinks is anti national. Eminent judges and jurists say there are enough laws to deal with seditious people! We are no longer slaves to our British rulers, the scenario has changed and we do not expect our elected government to take their place! The Laxman Rekha has already been crossed by misuse of this Act. With a majority government and disunited Opposition,the SC must promptly strike down any act bulldozed by the government in Parliament not in line with our Constitution!
