By Samir Umarye BICHOLIM JULY 23: Bicholim police have been besieged by unusual adversaries these days and the threat has nothing to do with criminal minds. The Bicholim police station has been a breeding ground for mosquitoes and these unusual guests were attacking the cops since last several days. The reason is obvious – the garbage, water stagnation and the old cars laying near the police station were the breeding grounds for the mosquitoes. The situation is worse as many of the unused cars, scooters, rickshaws and a bus are laying just next to the Police inspector's rest room. On Thursday, the police along with the health department were seen busy driving away the mosquitoes. "We were intimated through a letter by the PI for spraying of insecticides and so we are doing this for the safety of the police personnels" Bicholim Primary Health center sanitary inspector, Tanawade told adding "there are no cases reported in the police station and these are all safety measures. "The worst area are the unused chambers which have now become inaccessible and a safe heaven for misquotes and other animals" Tanawade claimed. "We were requested to administer the insecticides every week but it is not feasible neither the rules permits us to do the same" Tanawade explained. As the insecticide- pyrathone- is effective only in a close areas the rooms of the police station were closed for sometime which was something unusual for a daily visitor. Mosquitoes are not the only creatures to pose a threat to the Bicholim police. "Recently we rescued several snakes eventhough most of them were non poisonous from the same chambers laying attached to the police station" Amrut Singh of the animal rescue squad claims. The Bicholim police station which is housed in the old Portuguese jail still has several chambers and lock-ups which were earlier used by the cops for resting. But the same barracks are now stinking and have become place for all type of wild reptiles.
