The selling of Church and church property situations in Newfoundland, Canada
and the territory of Goa may not be the same.

In Newfoundland, churches and property are being sold to pay court ordered
reparations to abused victims. In Goa, the selling is taking place due to the
dishonesty of priests and their allies in lay councils and perhaps in the
hierarchy above. In Canada (like elsewhere) the abuse of children took place
under the watch of the bishops and as João Barros tells us, the illegal sales
of Goa Church property must most likely have taken place under the watch of
Archbishop House.

The situations differ, but the results are the same. Parishioners suffer.

In Goa the question is starker than in Newfoundland. In the former, huge real
estate development pressure exists and temptations to sell choice property
abounds. It’s only a matter of time before the ownership, order and system that
governs the relationship between diocese and parishioners crumbles if a strong
fence is not erected around the ties that bind them.
