The monsoon Session of Goa Legislative Assembly which commences on July 11th has to be a productive and fruitful one. Under the pretext of the ensuing Panchayat elections, the government has high-handedly curtailed the session which is a forum for MLAs to discuss, deliberate and legislate for the betterment of the state and its people. The move is unjustified and only further demonstrates the sheer arrogance of the government.
As we now have 19 first time MLAs, we would get to see their legislative skills and whether they have done their homework well besides proper research on issues that they raise and deliberate on. Let us hope the session will be vibrant and no MLA or Minister falls asleep as has been seen many times in the past sessions but will act and represent their constituents with passion, dedication and integrity. Nothing should stop even ruling party MLAs from raising issues concerning the public. The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly must be non-partisan and in fact should be totally detached from the political party he belongs to. But that has sadly not been happening. Even that training workshop for MLAs held on June 27th and 28th was nothing short of an RSS geared Sammelan which is so very deplorable. That given the State is cash starved it should not have been held in a five Star hotel is another issue. Adv.
