Goa. The state became the first in India to stop providing subsidies to 
electric vehicles (EV) with effect from July 31. Spread over an area of 3,702 
sq km, the state was home to the country’s first printing press — which was 
established in September, 1556 by Jesuit Missionaries and it functioned in the 
colegio de Sao Paulo at Old Goa — as also the first medical college, the Escola 
Médica-Cirúrgica de Nova Goa, now known as the Goa Medical College and 
Hospital, which was set up in 1842. It was also Asia’s first modern allopathic 
medical teaching institute.
