Let us not forget our many Goan brothers and sisters who also came here from
Uganda as Refugees when the Asians were expelled by the tyrant dictator Idi
Amin Dada, who came to Canada without the backing of the Agakhan or the Agakhan
Foundation. They quickly managed to get jobs and worked hard and did so much
themselves and for our Goan Community to start the Goan Overseas Association
and they moved on because of the Goan ability to adapt and to pursue
opportunities. They too came with a suitcase of their personal possessions
after being stripped of everything else. They had to start life as Refugees in
a foreign country and they prospered and are now proud Canadians. Many of them
had two jobs to make ends meet and shared accommodations to survive and they
now reap the fruits of their hard labour. It was not easy for many of them as
they had to start over. Those of us that came later, came on our own terms
with some if not all our possessions. We came as permanent residents as we got
the opportunity to do so and we too prospered with hard work. Canada is a land
of opportunities if one is prepared to work. I for one came on my own as an
independent and was very fortunate and blessed to get a job the very next day.
I never stopped working till I retired 6 1/2 years ago when my older daughter
was pregnant with twins. This is not to take away from the Ismailis who came
as refugees. I know several of my Ismaili classmates and friends who bought
Via Rail passes and travelled all over Canada looking for job opportunities in
remote parts of this and other Provinces and are now very successful
professionals or business people. It is the willingness to work hard to
achieve success which is denied to none.
