ago ie on 25.11.1510 the Portuguese set foot into Goa and stayed on for 451
yrs ie until 19 12.1961 Liberation of Goa.
Their earlier mission in March 1510 turned out to be unsuccessful.
Incidentally it was also the Feast of St Catherine and the Portuguese
navigators dedicated to her the first Church (now abandoned) as an act of
thanksgiving it was located just near the road leading to the Divar ferry
wharf at Old Goa
To this day the Church celebrates the feast of St Catherine now at the Se
Cathedral Old Goa shifting the ongoing venue of Novenas held in the open at
the Basilica for the ensuing Feast of St Francis Xavier on 3rd December
