Did it need a meeting of the G20 to be slated in Goa for the authorities to spruce up the place and clear the muck? What is being cleaned is only the route that will be covered during that meeting to be held from 17th to 19th April at a five-star hotel in Bambolim. The rest of Goa will have to live with the existing dirt and debris all over.
Government wants Goa to look beautiful for the visitors and so crores are being hurriedly spent to make it look so. What is highly objectionable is that taxpayer’s money is being poured on window dressing. All these substandard works in all probability will be washed away in the ensuing monsoons. Good streetlight poles and fixtures are being changed. Possibly the removed ones will be sold as scrap and a smart contractor will buy them and after a coat of paint will flog them as brand new somewhere else. What is further outrageous is that notified speed breakers have vanished obviously to ensure that the visiting G20 delegates do not have to face the inconvenience. It would be pertinent to know whether the Collector has issued an order denitrifying these speed breakers. And who should we hold responsible for the accidents and fatalities that may follow on account of the speed breakers that have disappeared. The G20 delegates must be shown the true side of Goa. The government with no strategy, in power but not in control, takes no heed of the old saying ‘he who pays the piper calls the tune’ ignoring the many urgent needs of the taxpayers but instead hoping that a few short-term cosmetic changes at huge expense will somehow be a blessing in disguise. If all these changes without much thought are hurriedly being made to suit a handful of visitors, then why were they not made for the people all this time? Surely what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander? Adv.
