Hi Oscar,
We explain in our book the Pre-Portuguese battles between Vijayanagar and
Bijapur over control of Goa and the Equine trade that passed through it -
something important for cavalries of both rulers of the period.
By inviting the Portuguese, now the new rulers would have to expend THEIR
human, materiel and fiscal resources while Vijayanagar would have access to the
horses. Strategically that is playing three-dimensional chess. Did the
natives take advantage of the Iberian's ignorance of the history of Goa?
The book - "Insights into Colonial Goa" by Philomena Lawrence and Gilbert
Lawrence is available on Amazon/ Kindle in Australia, EU, and UK. It is also
available as an e-book in India.
Best wishes and kind regards.Gilbert

Bhai Mauzo (Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo) has already spoken about how
Konkani suffered injustice during the Portuguese regime, how strictures were
imposed against its use. He also spoke about what the inquisition was. It
proves that injustice was done by the Portuguese on the people of Goa. But
people feel bad if I say it, because I speak as the chief minister, said Sawant.

The CM speaks like many Goan intellectuals and blames the colonization for all
the shortcomings of Goans. When the British ruled the Raj, including
Marathi-speaking areas, they did not promote the native language. That's because
they, like the Portuguese, were colonizers and they did not arrive for the
welfare of the natives.Yet that did not prevent the Marathi writers from
promoting their language during colonization. And the Karnataka writers under
the British and Tipu sultan's reign from expanding the application of the
Kanada script. Only in Goa do the literati and politicians (even today)
OUTSOURCE the promotion of Konkani to the state and church. Is that the sussegad
trait coming-through?BTW, the reason the Portuguese landed in Goa was because
of the invitation from Timoja Nayak, Mhalu Pai (Sardesai of Verna) and the Raya
of Vijayanagar.
