To develop and promote a language, the following are required:Linguists,
grammarians, literary critics, ethnologists, philologists, and writers, rather
than those versed in politics or theology. Perhaps government or philanthropic
scholarship grants in these fields may help. Politicization and Speechifying
will not help. Language development cannot be outsourced to the government or
the church.Consumers can help by purchasing the Konkani magazines and Konkani
books.

----------PANAJI: CM Pramod Sawant, responding to criticism of his comment that
all signs of Portuguese rule from Goa should be wiped out, said on Wednesday
that the injustice done to Goans during the inquisition is well-documented, but
people feel bad when he speaks about it. “I won’t speak any further or again
it will be said that I like to rake up the past. And it is my habit to look
towards the future,” said the CM, speaking at the inauguration of the new space
allotted to Goa Konkani Akademi in Panaji.

Injustices under Portuguese proven, yet people dislike when I talk: Goa CM
Pramod Sawant
PANAJI: CM Pramod Sawant , responding to criticism of his comment that all
signs of Portuguese rule from Goa should be wiped out, said on Wednesday that
the injustice done to Goans during the inquisition is well-documented, but
people feel bad when he speaks about it.
“I won’t speak any further or again it will be said that I like to rake up the
past. And it is my habit to look towards the future,” said the CM, speaking at
the inauguration of the new space allotted to Goa Konkani Akademi in Panaji.
“Bhai Mauzo (Jnanpith awardee Damodar Mauzo) has already spoken about how
Konkani suffered injustice during the Portuguese regime, how strictures were
imposed against its use. He also spoke about what the inquisition was. It
proves that injustice was done by the Portuguese on the people of Goa. But
people feel bad if I say it, because I speak as the chief minister,” said
Sawant.
While speaking at a function to mark the 350th anniversary of Shivaji’s
coronation, Sawant had said that at least on the 60th anniversary of Goa’s
Liberation, the state should remove all Portuguese influence and “have a fresh
start”.
Important that students study about inquisition: CM
He had said the Portuguese had begun destroying temples 350 years ago and it
was stopped only after Shivaji confronted them.
“Good that literary figures like Bhai Mauzo and Mahabaleshwar Sail spoke about
it, because people understand it better when it comes from literary figures.
It is very important that students study what occurred during the inquisition.
The new generations should know about it,” he said.
Sawant said that his government has requested the Centre to allow Goans to
answer national recruitment exams in Konkani.
“Our government is working to get several competitive exams and recruitment
exams held in Konkani, either for banking, railways, or postal jobs. Our
correspondence with the Centre is on. Within a few days, we will attain
success on this,” said the CM.
He said that work of constructing a Konkani Bhavan will also be expedited.
“It has been said that it has been 60 years, but Konkani is not getting its own
home. But we have given it a good place this time around. We want to build a
Konkani Bhavan at the earliest. I want this dream to be fulfilled soon,” said
Sawant, adding that he has made it a point to present the past four state
budgets in Konkani.
"We have made financial provisions to host the Vishwa Konkani Sammelan in Goa.
We want to hold it in such a manner that we receive Konkani speakers from
across the globe," said Sawant.
He said that until children do not take up Konkani programmes, there will not
be enough literature coming out in the language in the future.
"We hardly have any literature coming out after Mahabaleshwar Sail, it is
mainly dramas. Many students need to take up post graduate studies and PhDs in
Konkani to be able to create literature in Konkani."
