Hindus press issue on U.S. Senate prayer
WASHINGTON (UPI) -- Groups representing Hindus have asked U.S. presidential
candidates to denounce those who interrupted a Hindu prayer in the U.S.
Senate.

Three people interrupted the prayer July 12 -- the first prayer by a Hindu
cleric to open a Senate session. The protesters were quickly removed from
the chamber and arrested.

The Hindu American Foundation and the International Society for Krishna
Consciousness say no senator has publicly came out against their actions,
The Washington Post reported Friday.

Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., had invited Rajan Zed, a chaplain from
Reno, Nev., to open the Senate that day. A number of Christian groups,
including the American Family Association and Operation Rescue, issued
statements before and after July 12 opposing non-Christian prayer in
Congress.

Christian groups have said the protesters -- Ante Nedlko Pavkovic, Katherine
Lynn Pavkovic and their daughter, Christan Renee Sugar, all of Davidson, N.C.
-- acted alone.
