My mother is a fearless woman, which is quite odd. Woman and fearless? Anyways. She had to inculcate this characteristic because of her house being located at isolated place and there being no other home within a 1.5 km radius. She was immune to random encounters with giant creatures, inclusive of leopards, wild boar, jackal, bison, and the like. My mother narrated to me the story of Krishna Appa's wife, Yashoda Kaki, when we were accustomed to watching the TV serial, 'Aap Beeti'. This B.R. Chopra popular Hindi TV horror serial narrated stories based on people's experiences of paranormal activities, ghosts, spirits, black magic and supernatural beings. It was the very fine day of Amavasya (lunar phase of the new moon, when spirits of ancestors are believed to come down to earth to bless their descendants). My mother was busy cooking in the kitchen, and just then a familiar voice kept coming from Aannu's coconut grove. Aai knew that it was Yashoda Kaki, who was standing in the coconut grove in the front and calling her. Aai and Yashoda Kaki were emotionally close to one another. She was affectionate and caring, so was Aai to her. As soon as Aai heard the voice she came out hurriedly, facing the coconut grove, she cried out loudly, "Why have you come to my house? Go to your husband's house. There's nothing here for you." Yashoda Kaki stopped calling my mother. Aai came inside home and asked my grandma to perform Drishta, the remedy for evil-eye. After the ritual, she went in the backyard and washed her feet. She was thinking about Yashoda Kaki who had demised twelve days ago but was still awake around her, in her mind. -- Vighnesh Shirgurkar, from Vantem, Sattari, North Goa, has a Master's degree in English Literature from the Goa University as well as a Bachelor's degree in Education from the University of Mumbai.
