Hi Doc,The best vindaloo I ever had was when my grand-mom pointed to one pigling - out of eight - in the compound and asked me to go capture that particular one. She assumed that eight year old me would never be able to do so, which would give her time to grind the masala before she came out to help me. What fun! At one point the mother pig started to chase me but I caught the pigling in less than fifteen minutes and managed to put it into a gunny sack, as instructed, in the room next to the bathroom. The supreme dish in the UK, yestercentury, was roast beef and potatoes. I read somewhere a few years ago that the most popular food item now was vindaloo albeit the UK had its own version.

No fancy restaurants I’ve always tried to interest my old relatives either with good speciality restaurants, or my own Italian/ French cooking. Again, none of these dishes equaled the luscious flavour of their Goan home cooking! I imagine I could have raised their appreciation if I added heat to boef bourguignon or chicken cacciatore, but I know they’d ask where’s the cumin and turmeric. There was no winning, except my mother who used to read Woman and Woman’s Own magazines from UK, and learned to cook exotic meals which puzzled us even as we enjoyed them. The reason I took my relatives there was because they were cooking for me for three weeks, so I thought I would treat them to something different. After they finished eating, the verdict was that they could prepare better sorpotel. In addition, they could cook for ten people for the price I paid for one plate of sorpotel. I learnt my lesson that day. After that I would read out the menu to them and then ask what they wanted without disclosing the prices. A gourmet meal in Goa (then) was a little more than the price of a meal at McDonald’s in the US.
