Patients in Hospitals Need Proper Care — Not Paid Attendants A disturbing trend has emerged in government hospitals where patients are compelled to hire private attendants at around ₹2,000 per day, including meals. Even private hospitals, which already charge nursing fees, permit this practice. What then is the role of nurses? These attendants, often occupying open spaces, are a nuisance, compromising hygiene and safety, with reported instances of theft. Hospitals have strict visiting hours for a reason — to maintain an aseptic environment and patient privacy. The State Government , Minister of health and hospital authorities must immediately curb this unethical practice and, if necessary, appoint adequate nursing staff to ensure proper care. Patients should not be exploited under the guise of “extra service.” Such practices are unheard of in developed nations, where even visitor numbers are strictly regulated. – Nelson Lopes, Chinchinim
