Relevance of Regional parties After Goa became a Union Territory, regional parties like the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) and United Goans Party (UGP) emerged as strong voices of the people. MGP ruled for long before UGP gained ground. The Congress later captured power, crediting itself with Goa’s liberation, the Opinion Poll, statehood, and language recognition. This success weakened regional outfits through defections and mergers.
The BJP entered the scene, first aligning with MGP on common interests, later absorbing and sidelining it. With defections from Congress, BJP established dominance. National parties today control funds, dictate development, and suppress local aspirations, creating the impression that only central power ensures progress. However, India’s diversity of caste, language, and culture makes the two-party system irrelevant. Regional parties in Bengal, Bihar, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu continue to champion local causes despite central pressure. Goa too must revive regional forces like GFP, MGP, and RGP to safeguard its unique identity and aspirations. Concentration of authority in national parties undermines federalism and weakens democratic balance. A vibrant regional voice is vital to protect Goa’s interests and preserve the true spirit of Indian democracy. Nelson Lopes Chinchinim . Nelson Lopes Chinchinim https://lopesnelsonnat.wordpress.com
