Today, corruption in Goa permeates every level of politics. It seems nobody is interested in the welfare of Goa - everyone is interested in making a fast buck for himself rather than serve the public. Even the Panchayats function along the same lines. An elected Sarpanch faces a vote of No-Confidence before s/he is through his/her term. Why? It is because somebody else would like to take over his/her position, of course to make a fast buck or should I say faster buck? At what price? Every 'panch' member is bribed between 1-3 lakhs to vote for a new face. And how much do you think it costs to change sides to topple an elected government? Between Rs.20 to 40 crores!!! If you cannot figure out the amount, please approach the guys who switched sides to form the GDA - "Ghaddvanchea Dhondeacho Avallo" (Tact of transferring donkey business)!

Here are the lyrics of a Konkani song "CORRUPTION" by Comedian Domnic taken from his audio cassette album titled "Peleachi Seva". The last line of the song

"Ani tanneim oxench korit tor, dusre pavtti munis nakai; ek zonvar ami nivllun haddiea" (And if they also do the same, there is no need to elect a person next time; we'll elect an animal instead)

is worth pondering.

Yes, at times we Goans feel an animal might give us better service than our present lot of elected members of the Legislative Assembly who seem to be following the rules of the Animal Kingdom - might is right. Better still, why have an election? Let the elected MLAs arrange for a 'musical chair game' whenever they feel like changing the government and elect a new government. Whoever ends up with a hat on his head, becomes the CM and forms the government. This way, we shall avoid unnecessary election expenses and inconvenience to the common man.

BTW, what are our chances of getting into the Guinness Book of World Records for having the most governments in least time?
