Guts, Glory and Empire: The Epic Story of Goans in Zanzibar, 1865-1910, is a
glorious narrative of the 19th century Goan, compelled to leave the villages of
Chinchinim, Velim, Orlim, Velsão to the South and Aldona, Saligao and Siolim to
the North. They made their way to Zanzibar as stewards, cooks and
tavern-keepers selling alcohol down by the harbour, but within two decades
became hugely influential and wealthy. This is the story of how Goans became
the Sultan of Zanzibar’s favourite musicians, interpreters, doctors and
traders, and how they pushed back against the British empire.

There is a lot of family history, political intrigue and historical drama in
this book. If you have any links to East Africa, you might suddenly find
details of your family which you never knew of. It's hugely entertaining and an
easy read.
You can buy it at Dogears and other leading stores across India, or on Amazon
