Goa Govt. institutes award in memory of Dilip Sardesai

Panaji, Aug. 8 (PTI): The Goa Government has
instituted an award in honour of late Dilip Sardesai, the only Goan to play
cricket for India.

Today being Sardesai's birthday this is the best
occasion to announce the award which comprise of a bronze plate and a cash
prize of Rs one lakh, Chief Minister Digamber Kamat said while talking to
reporters today.

The award will be given from next year to an
outstanding Goan sportsperson at international level on August 15 every 

Saurav Bandekar, who represented India in the
Under-19 Afro-Asia cricket tournament held at Vishakhapanam in 2005 was also
honoured by Sports Authority of Goa with a cash prize of Rs one lakh. Saurav
was the highest wicket taker in the tournament.

Later, he also participated in the U-19 World Cup
cricket tournament held in Sri Lanka
in 2006, where India
finished runners-up.
