GDA will back Dabolim as Goas
sole international airport

MARGAO, AUG 8 Save Goa Supremo Churchill Alemao has said
theres no question of Goa opting for two or three airports in the State and
affirmed that the Goa Democratic Alliance will only support Dabolim as Goas
lone international airport.
Alemao declined to react to a statement by Union Civil Aviation Minister and
NCP leader Praful Patel that Goa can even have a third airport, besides the
existing Dabolim Airport and the proposed airport at
Mopa. Let them make any statements they like. But, I am only for Dabolim
airport as Goas sole international airport,
he said.
Replying to a question, the Navelim MLA said that the Goa Democratic Alliance
will only support the upgradation of the Dabolim Airport
as a modern international airport. The GDA will make work out a plan how to
utilise the land under acquisition at Mopa, he added.
Alemaos stand assumes significance given that the GDAs major alliance
partner, the BJP, is known for the partys support to the proposed airport at
Mopa.
In fact, the BJP had held meetings in the North when Alemao - then a Congress
MP - was moving around Salcetes countryside a year ago, drumming up support
for his campaign to save Dabolim Airport and the scrapping of the Mopa airport.
It is not known whether Alemaos statement is acceptable to the BJP given that
the party had campaigned for the Mopa
Airport a year ago.
