NGOs pleas with PM to let CRZ stay
PANJIM: Various environmental groups have got together and sent a
letter to Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh regarding the proposal of
Ministry of Environment and Forests to replace the Coastal Regulatory
Zone Notification, 1991. In their letter they said that the
environment groups of Goa are exceedingly saddened by the move to
replace the 1991 CRZ Notification with a diluted, ineffectual,
confused Coastal Zone Management notification. The new CZM
notification in effect removes the High Tide Line and the 500 zone as
important features. [WE-GT]

Even with the CRZ in place, we have seen what has happened in
Baga-Calangute, Miramar, and elsewhere along the coast and the inland
river banks. If we have the CRZ replaced by a subjective CZM, there
will be no public spaces on the river and sea fron of Goa.
