Philip,
Goanet needs voices like you. Infact I would not be
amiss in saying Goa needs voices like you. It is
unfortunate that in Goa, so much of time is frittered
away on politics and political games, that attention
is not paid in any measure to the economic planning of
Goa. Indeed an economic think-tank is the need of the
hour in Goa.
Perhaps the most unfortunate aspect of our Goan polity
is that is is inundated by roadside Romeos, who are
totally oblivious to any planning, be it economic or
otherwise, and hence are unable to take advantage of
the what is currently happening in India today.
Goa must realise that it cannot operate in a vacuum,
and that like it or not, Goa will become a satellite
city to Mumbai. For instance, Mumbai is geared to
become an International Finance centre. As such, it
will be attracting scores of commercial travelers in
the near future. There is a lucrative market in wooing
the commercial traveler. Ofcourse doing this will
necessarily mean planning in tandem with Mumbai,
setting up the necessary conference capacities,
auditoriums, convention centres, etc.
Goa has a tremendous opportunity at the moment to
become a world-class city, instead it will sell itself
to the lowest and dirtiest bidder (such as those
bungalow complexes sprouting all over Goa at the
moment), myopic and visionless as our dreams are for
ourselves.
