Tribute to my Goan College Carmel College, Nuvem

Long before the Spice Girls were born, and Girl power was even dreamt off one
College in Goa
stood out as a beacon for the empowerment of women. It propagated independence
and self-confidence
as Mantras for the adolescent, and the girl on the journey to womanhood.
I opted to travel the grueling bumpy 20 odd kilometre ride daily by
bone-rattling buses driven by
drivers with life-endangering driving styles, all the way from Vasco, even
though we lived less
than a hundred metres away from a Vasco based College that offered the same
curriculum and would
have conferred on me the same degree.
The choice I made moulded me into a much more confident and independent woman.
It wasnt the
academics that attracted me to Carmel College, that I could have had at any
college. It was the
fact that I would have the opportunity to shine in various spheres of
extra-curricular activities.
In the Traditional male-dominated society of India, all Student Councils
Representatives, General
Secretaries and University Representatives all tended to be males. Carmel
College empowered Women
with the opportunity and the ability to display their true Leadership
qualities. I was fortunate
enough to have been elected to the Student Council for all my 5 years of
Graduate study and the
icing on the cake was being elected to the prestigious University
Representative seat on the
Bombay University Students Council. Several of my colleagues went onto to take
up careers in Law
and Politics and shone.
The more daring among us treaded the path that was strewn with opportunity, be
it in the field of
Stage craft, Music, Sports or the NCC. The door to opportunity was always open
to the daring and
success came to those who dared.
Singing and playing guitar with the College Choir, Voice of Carmels,
Elocution & Quiz
Competitions galore, Fetes and our annual Inter-class Dramatic Competitions are
listed as a few of
my favourite things. Theyre the stuff memories are made of.
The ambiance at Carmels made learning fun. It was the ideal place to meet
like-minded and forward
thinking women. I remember the days and the friends with fondness.
Long live my Alma Mater Carmel College, Nuvem, Goa.
