Sri Lankan Pilgrims Visit Mudipu Shrine

By SAR NEWS

MUDIPU, Karnataka (SAR NEWS) -- A group of Sri Lankan pilgrims,
devotees of Blessed Father Joseph Vaz of Goa, visited his shrine at
Mudipu, August 16.

The pilgrims, thirty-three in all, belonging to the Blessed Joseph Vaz
Society of Sri Lanka, have been making their fifth visit to the shrine
in recent years.

Blessed Father Vaz worked as a missionary in Mangalore and Sri Lanka
where he worked for the Catholics facing difficulties because of their
faith.

A monument to his great work as a missionary in Mangalore, in the form
of a shrine, has been built on a hill at Mudipu, a part of the parish
where he worked as parish priest. Father Vaz is also said to have
performed several miracles even during his lifetime.

The new parish of Mudipu in Mangalore diocese is dedicated to Blessed
Vaz and many pilgrims flock to the shrine particularly on the novena
day.

Elyarpadav parish priest, Father Reginald Pinto concelebrated the
Eucharistic mass along with others, August 16. The Lankan pilgrims
were greeted by Blessed Joseph Vaz Church assistant parish priest,
Father Lancy Saldanha. Parish council's former vice-president, Michael
D'Souza, welcomed the office-bearers, on behalf of parish community
and pilgrimage centre, by presenting roses. Rolphy Mascarenhas
explained the backdrop of the shrine, the missionary work of Blessed
Vaz and the developments undertaken at the shrine.
