Nothing remains today of the St Ines we knew. The
coconut orchards are gone, the fields are gone, our
Tadmad ground is gone, even the chawl is now gone,
torn down to make way for a new concrete atrocity….

right, Rajan
Tadmad is gone and so has Tambdimati…
remember that coconut tree at Tambdi Mati, that split
into four palms in mid air…
we could walk across fields and those huge PWD pipes
to reach Taleigao and then across more fields to
Calapur…
The path to Kerant and Caranzalem was through radish
and tambdi bhaji fields…
Now we have tar to burn our tyres on…
10 minutes ONLY from Panaji to Taleigao…
what’s the point in going slow…
nothing to look at anyway…
only high compound walls…
and mountains of concrete…

Soiru Varde wrote in another context, but it fits
right here…
Dolle kadein yeun ravli dukaa, gall-ar ekui goll-lea
na…
(the tears have filled the eyes to the brim, but none
flows onto the cheek)

Awaiting death, the wounded one lies at my feet
But I won’t let the greedy vultures do their dirty bit
