Baaz-to´dop used to be a very elegant dress used by Brhamin Christian ladies.

The apparel consisted of two pieces: The "to´dop" was an intricately embroidered, often with silver/gold thread, silken/brocade skirt, not closed-stitched, draped waist
down.

The "baaz" was the chaste blouse, lighter in material but also most intricately
embroidered.

Most predominant in Salcete.

I suppose it was the Christian Brahmin compromise with the lower-caste "kapod" or
the "Hindu sari".

If any ancestral clothes´ chests should turn up any un-moth devoured specimen should be highly treasured and no surrendered to the passionate pleas of "souvenir
gatherers."

Alfred de Tavares,
Great- & grandnephew of innumerable to´dopkarns.

Subject: [Goanet] "Baaz to-doop" dress from Goa of the old
Date: Wed, 22 Aug 2007 23:21:45 -0400

A couple of cousins in the UK whilst doing research their family tree
came across the term "baaz to-doop"...its the way middle class women
dressed at the turn of the century or earlier. Never heard of this and
wondering anyone is in the know of this.

I have posted am old picture on http://goanbeer.blogspot.com/...take a
look (not sure this is the way they dressed "baaz to-doop" or "baaz
to-dop" (this is the best I could do in terms of how the word/term
sounds).

cheers.
