Taka sodd, to fokot polleta echo kosso zata poi to. Poilo IIT ani atam Marathi. Coming to your comment regarding Sunaparant news paper, you are right when you say that the readership is very low, but have you checked why? Marathi papers have existed in Goa long before Konkani even became an official language of Goa. But before that as far as I remember there used to be papers like Uzvadd, Vavradeancho Ixtt, which used to sell quite well, although for what reasons they shut down, I have no idea, but Vavradeancho Ixtt is still selling, same way there is another monthly called Dor moineanchi Rotti, which also sells. Devanagri has been taught in schools maybe about 20 years now? From these 20 age group people, how many are interested in politics? Maximum if they buy news papers, it maybe to see the sports, or entertainment column. You must be knowing that The Church released the Bible for the first time ( the complete Bible in Roman Script) and it sold like hot cakes. what do you think its sale would have been had it been released in Devanagri Script? Every nook and corner of Goa had patt Shalas, teaching Marathi, where as all other schools have been teaching english as that was the medium of instructions in schools. In my village itself, there were three patt shalas. Wonder what was the total strength than and now. As to what I heard, there are some with only two or three students and a teacher, who draws better salary than the private teachers who teach hundreds of students. Most of the shallas which were closed due to no students, had their teachers transferred to teach devanagri Konkani. If all these years students have been learning Marathi, than obviously, the marathi paper will sell more. One thing that I can say though is that all who learnt Marathi, must have found better job opportunities in maharashtra and Mumbai where by there are so many Goans in Mumbai, remember, even Lata Mangeshkar attained success in Mumbai :-) Cheers Jerry Fernandes Kamalaksh Chari wrote ... Yes floriano, Dr. Carmo is totally wrong regarding his language perspective. Marathi is most written, read and used language in Goa compared to Konkani. Dr. Carmo, If you don't know about ground reality, then let me tell you, there are more then 10 marathi newspapers circulated all over Goa compared to Konkani newspaper, which is lone i.e. "sunaparant" and that too has only 4 pages. This is really sad story, that those who shout about Konkani has hardly got one newspaper to read written in Devnagari script. Marathi has brought laurels to Goa by producing great singers, artists, writers and is also deeply rooted in Goa's culture as well.
