Dear all,
You might be aware that the internet situation in Goa is pathetic, in
some ways. While the cost of accessing the Net has been falling
consistently, and down-time has been reducing, in Goa there are many
areas which are simply still deprived of broadband facilities.
Villages like Moira (just one example), for instance, which have a
significant expat population, are yet to get the broadband facilities.
In other areas, the capacity has already been clogged up, and the
officials are either slow at responding or simply don't seem to be
sufficiently motivated. At times, the equipment is in place, but
inexplicably an install gets long delayed, till villagers press for
the service to be launched.
In the case of villages like Saligao and Aldona, only after citizens
raised their voice did the officials speen up the broadband plans.
There are places like Porvorim (which, incidentally, itself is home to
small IT companies) where broadband is not available in some areas.
Officials keep giving excluses, arguing that capacity or lines are not
available! For a small State, which could benefit from telecommuting
(including by helping to reduce pressure on the road network, by way
of unnecessary travel) Goa does need to take up this seriously. While
Goa brags about its 2008 plans, the actual ground-level situation in
more remote places like Pernem and Canacona as far as broadband goes
can only be imagined!
In this context, would concerned citizens help to campaign for the
speedy extension to these services in various parts of Goa? Am copying
this note to Goanet and also some friends from Moira, who have been
working on the issue. Please copy it to anyone else who is interested
in getting a solution on an issue like this.
May I suggest:
* We email/phone as many officials in Goa as possible, and in Delhi
too, urging them that broadband be speedily extended to all alreas of
Goa. Some persons you could contact are:

can't pretend as if they've already done their job!
* We should also write to top BSNL officials about the state of
affairs as far as expanding telecom in Goa is concerned. See
