During the 33rd annual conference of the Association of Microbiologists of
India organised at the Goa University in 1991, I came to know about the
contributions of Dr Froilano De Mello for the first time when I was asked to
write about the history of microbiological research in Goa. Later on I learnt
more about this famous and erudite personality from the Indo-Portuguese
historian and chronicler of the city of Panaji, Mr Percival Noronha.
