Concessions obtained
for Kuwait
war victims

BY HERALD REPORTER

The NRI Commission has now managed to obtain some concessions for Kuwait
war victims from the offices of the Special Kuwait Cell in the ministry of
external affairs. It has forwarded names of 75 claimants whose money is at
present with the Syndicate Bank branches in Goa,
NRI Commissioner, Eduardo Faleiro said.

The list of these names is available at the office of the Commissioner for NRI
Affairs at the Secretariat, Porvorim. These claimants should contact the
nearest Syndicate Bank branch and claim the money supported by documents like
original passport and a copy of the status letter from the ministry of external
affairs, he said.

The United Nation Claims Commission (UNCC) provide a time limit of six months
for disburse-ment of claims but due to the efforts of NRI Com-mission,
the ministry of external affairs has agreed to ensure that the banks
retain the award amounts beyond the period of six months.

Extension in time for settlement was needed because in some cases the
beneficiary has died and the heir has to be brought on record, said
Faleiro adding, the permanent representative of the Government of
India at the United Nations will obtain regularisation of these decisions at
the next sessions of the UNCC in October 2007.

Thanks to efforts of the NRI Commission, about 200 Goan victims of the Kuwait
war have
availed of compensation ranging from Rs 4 lakh to 50 lakh.

The NRI Commissioner Eduardo Faleiro told a press conference on Friday here that
if not for efforts of NRI commission — victims of Iraq-Kuwait war 1990-91 would
have forfeited their claims as their addresses’ were not known.

Scholarships for NRI children: The Ministry of Overseas India Affairs has
introduced a scholarship programme for the children of the Indian Diaspora (NRI
and PIOs). One hundred assistance-on-merit-basis scholarships are provided
under the programme so that India’s
higher education is available to the children of the Indian diaspora. The
scholarships are available for professional and general courses except for
medical and related courses.
