Although many newly weds nowadays would have landed on the moon and tasted honey much before marriage, ‘honeymoon’ still remains a ritual to be performed with as much expense as possible. The word ‘honeymoon’ has become so popular with newly weds that they will go even to the extent of borrowing money and celebrating it - we even have 'honeymoon' ice cream! Well-to-do couples travel outside their states/countries to celebrate honeymoon.

In the past, the first wedding night was spent at home and honeymoon was celebrated on a “xendri” (mat) in the “osro” (hall), that too in the midst of other family members – remember people lived in ‘joint families’ then. Everything on the first wedding night happened naturally and the couple did not even know they had celebrated honeymoon.

Let us see what comedienne Janet has to say to her husband about honeymoon in the following joke, which is in Salcete Konkani:

Vokol: Ar’re muj ghova, tuko ankvar astonnam incharlom mure, honeymoon mhull’llo kit kai mhunnu? Tedom tum mak sangtalo kazrodis sangtam mhunn. Magir tuko aem kazrodis hall-an nachta astonnam portun incharlem, honeymoon mhull’llo kit kai mhunn. Tedom tum mak mhunno lagolo - matxem rav gho; sanj sangotam mhunn. Punn aiz ami honeymoon-a son eilear don dis zalet punn tuim mak azun pasun sanglo nam honeymoon mhull’llo kit to!

Novro: Agho! Tuka azun koll’llo nam – honeymoon mhull’llo kit tem?

Vokol: Nam re - khorem kollo nam!

Novro: Ratiko amche bhitor kit zal num, tek honeymoon mhunnttai!

Vokol: Ahm-m-m-m-m! Tek honeymoon mhunnttaii? A-a-avoi! Teso honeymoon hanv ankvar astonnam bokddeank ghevn voita astonnam kitu patti keleai!

Moi-mogan,
