Armstrong Augusto Vaz wrote (and I have summarised into points):
1: The duo come under increasingly eager Goans who "jumped ship"
2: 'For the Goans the first job in the US is working at a Gas station
(petrol pump) or in a motel, for emergency purposes until a 'gaubhau'
can find a job within a month,' says Travasso.
3: Goans working in Indian restaurants owned by the Indian owners have
got their green cards through an amnesty from Bill Clinton in 1999
4: The cooks are paid mostly on a weekly basis ranging from $500 to
800 per week.
5: In downtown New Orleans waiters are offered $150 per week plus tips
and business is brisk and hotels are short staffed, and so waiters can
make up to $1000, informed some Goans who have been working there.
6: The Goan network of Americans is gradually growing and increasing
with every passing month.

My dear Armstrong,
Whenever I read articles like the one you posted, I wonder if what
Nehru and the mainstream Indian press said about Goans - was true.
There has been a stereotype within which Goans have been 'dismissed'
i.e. WHAT do they know ...after all they are just Cooks and Butlers.
The article posted by you, albeit unintentionally, strengthens that view
point.
I wish the Article relating to 'Goans in America - Seeking the
American Dream' and 'The Goan network of Americans' had also included
atleast one sentence about the intellectual and Professional Goans who
have made America their 'Dream' and their 'Home'.
If it had - it would have stated that MANY Goans are holding
significant positions and making significant contributions in the
fields of Education, the Arts, Engineering, Medicine, Accounting,
Information Technology, Pharmacology, Research, Law and Banking
...just to name a few fields.
For our general information - we may wish to know that for the past
100+ years, Goans have made quite a name for themselves abroad; a good
name - not only in the food service industry but also in the
professions listed immediately above.
They may not be beating their chests like Tarzan or Churchill - but
they are all over the place giving an excellent account of themselves.
good wishes as always
